The Path from Ohio to San Francisco
The Ohio Years: Born in Youngstown in 1915, his initial exposure to creative structures happened locally. He received his earliest training through classes in the Youngstown public school system and at the Butler Art Institute (Now known as the Butler Institute of American Art).
However, his pursuit of art as a full-time profession was put on hold when he served in the U.S. Army during WWII (1942–1945).
The Westward Journey: It was during and immediately after his military service that his determination to become a career painter solidified. He traveled through New Mexico and Arizona, briefly stopping in Los Angeles before officially settling in San Francisco.
The Full-Time Transition: Once in the Bay Area, he used his post-war years to enroll at the California School of Fine Arts from 1948 to 1952. This effectively launched his professional era within the Montgomery Block and the North Beach Beat scene.
The Butler Art Institute welcomed Cucaro back home for a solo exhibit in 1958.
